Thoughts on Afghan youth

A review of the history of Afghanistan reminds us of war. Unfortunately, it was mostly young people who fell victim to them. Afghanistan has suffered from many physical and emotional damages, and has lost many of its human resources over the years.

After the entrance of Soviet forces into Afghanistan following the coup of 1979, people were divided into two camps. One lived under the umbrella of communism, and the other stood for resistance and jihad and they started fighting against each other. During the years of jihad more than 2 million people, who were mostly quite young, were killed.

If we take a look now, we will see that the youth of the country are deprived of their rights and are educated. Young people mostly between the ages of 25 to 35 are illiterate. They are, in fact, too old for study because they have the responsibility of providing for their homes.

During the 30 years of war between mujahedeen and communists, nothing was done in the area of education. Youth became puppets of different political groupings, and even after the collapse of Taliban the lack of a unified education system has resulted in a large number of youth with no education whatsoever.

Vocational education offers a partial solution, but it must be improved to offer employment opportunities. Otherwise, unemployment will drive youth to war, drug use and drug trafficking and even to suicide.

During the eight year rule of our current government, little has been done to help youth. And yet if a young person has links to state officials or NGOs, everything will be properly managed for him or her. That is because connections trump rules in all aspects of life in this country.

One hears that a number of organisations and offices have been set up to find jobs for youth. But they and other political groups are only exploiting youth to achieve their own goals.

Young people, however, are unwilling to fall victim or be misused again. They know they need education. Right now more than 70 percent of youth are illiterate. Without education there will be no hope for their futures. If the government and organisations responsible for supporting youth do not take any action to improve the lives of these young people, they will be forced to choose wrong paths, which will demolish the social fabric.

Let me add that we do have youth unions in Afghanistan. But like other organisations, they only preach and do not practise and are just working to collect money.

Because most of governmental and non-governmental organisations do not work for youth, I implore officials of responsible organisations to work for the young generation of Afghanistan and provide them proper education. With education, rules will once again trump connections, and we will have the prospects for a successful future in our country.

  • Personal message: The due attention must be paid to the education of the youth. Because if they don't get to enter the university after graduating from high school, they will be left unemployed. This will lead them to the path of vagrancy and fighting, suicide, using drugs, and smuggling. Thanks!

  • I am totally appreciated what you mentioned, I am the one who received 100% yield of war. We therefore could not finish university, and I was student of civil engineer deportment. During Taliban regime, I would like to tell you what you have written its less than what happened during in last 30 years war.

  • I am proud of you all educated Afghans and hope that you spread these articles as much as possible in websites, because we see many young people being used as political tools. For example, Mr. Taheri, I hope that you inform all zealous young men of our oppressed country. With respect, Arian Jarasi (the leader of young Afghan fedayees)

  • I am so thankful to my all friends who passed thier commintes on afghan issues. It is the reality that from the first day the afghan people are facing war problems but there is no care of thier lives. All the humantarian organization are doing work for the suppporting and facilitating the people in other areas but thay are not taking any solid action for he betterment and prosperity of the afghan people. I suggest that all the nations should join toghtar and set a plateform to discuss the afghan issues and to sortout a solid solution about thier probles.

  • i am totally agree with my friend.it is true that youth of afghanistan lack education and their is no proper planing for them to educate them. youth are consider the strength of nations but does our youth can do that. i think no because what portion our budget allocate for youth education. our youth is totally deprived of basic needs. we are the victim of poverty and ignorance. billion of dollors are allocated for mass destructive wepeons but a very small portion is for the furture of youth.

  • Until now we couldn’t reach to a general agreement or common understanding about national interests in Afghanistan, and this shortcoming eradicates the roots of every hope-giving activity. Still there is no generally acceptable idea or thought source among the youth of Afghanistan. Disregarding the peoples who are the victims of the lack of necessary backgrounds, even the educated Afghans do not still know the way to become a nation or the way to reach successfully to a national consolidation. The historical oppressions, old traditions, lack of the real bases of co-operation for the youth and the ill behavior and activities of the ethnic leaders have all caused that the term “youth” to be defined in the political nomenclature of the country as a perplexed and mindless generation. So we should find the ways to create unanimity and consentience and to provide a common understanding of history and facts of this country among the youth. The youth must recognize the criminals as criminal even if they are from their own tribe and clan.

  • Afghanistan is in a bad condition and nobody cares about the youth in the country. All of the young people have bad conditions and they are all jobless and without fate. Our government staff do not care at all and they are in our own thinking. Those who are powerful and their status is better, they grab government posts while their eduction is not in an upper level than others. Parliament apparently is corrupt and they do illegal acts to be elected in next term as well. Why a group of opportunists gather and do illegal acts? Because they want votes to be elected in next term. Lets hope for a day that these criminals and looters and thieves be punished and justice and equality be alive and we have a powerful Afghanistan and these amisses and brutals. Thanks
