Kazakh-Russian tokamak produces first plasma

OSKEMEN, Kazakhstan -- A joint Kazakhstani-Russian tokamak has produced its first plasma, Kurchatov Institute President Yevgenii Velikhov told journalists September 6.

Tokamaks are doughnut-shaped chambers used in fusion energy research.

The tokamak in the Eastern Kazakhstani Oblast cost US $15m to build.
