LONDON -- Apples genetically originated in present-day Kazakhstan, scientists write in the latest issue of Nature Genetics. Riccardo Velasco of Italy and co-authors have traced the apple's genetic ancestry to Malus sieversii, a wild plant from southern Kazakhstan.
The research apparently validates the folk belief that Almaty was named for apples, EurasiaNet reported August 30.
