Tajiks expect decline in Afghan drug exports in 2010

DUSHANBE -- Better law enforcement and a fungus likely will reduce the volume of Afghan narcotics exported this year, Khalimdzhon Makhmudov, an official of the Tajik Drug Control Agency (AKN), predicted at a July 28 news conference.
The AKN expects an approximate 25% decline in the volume of Afghan drugs flowing through Tajikistan this year, Makhmudov said.
The fungus has struck Afghanistan's opium poppy crop. Makhmudov cited growing Afghan demand for narcotics as another reason for the reduction of drug exports, CA-NEWS.org reported.
