ANGREN, Uzbekistan – Human rights activist Dmitry Tikhonov claimed persecution by Uzbek authorities in a Ferghana.ru interview published July 12.
Tikhonov survived two assassination attempts and is battling efforts to portray him as a paedophile, he said. He also cannot obtain an exit visa to join a zoological expedition abroad, Tikhonov said.
Tikhonov, an Angren member of the Rights Defence Alliance of Uzbekistan, exposed corruption in the Angren police and the Almalyk gold ore-processing complex. He campaigned to bring official attention to the plight of a ten-year-old girl whose alcoholic prostitute mother was neglecting her.
