DUSHANBE -- Northern Tajik authorities are cracking down on illegal private Islamic instruction, news media reported July 13.
Operation Madrassa, which began in May, is intended to shut down illegal schools operated in private residences for children up to age 16. The schools teach Arabic and the fundamentals of Islam.
Police have arrested Maruf Rozikov, a 34-year-old Surkh resident, during the crackdown. Rozikov taught Islam to 20 children illegally in his home, Soghd Oblast police told Ferghana.ru.
