ASTANA -- The Kazakhstani senate approved "leader of the nation" status for President Nursultan Nazarbayev May 13, news media reported a day after the lower house of parliament unanimously passed the measure.
The bill awaits Nazarbayev's signature.
It gives Nazarbayev immunity from all prosecution and final say over policy even if he leaves office.
Critics accuse Nazarbayev of embezzlement and human rights violations. His supporters reject accusations of misbehaviour by Nazarbayev.
