GENEVA – Human Rights Watch asked the UN March 10 to demand improvement in Uzbekistan’s human rights record. The organisation pointed to the “government’s persecution of human rights defenders, rampant torture and ill-treatment, and religious persecution”, Ferghana.ru reports March 11.
The UN Human Rights Committee is expected to assess the Uzbek situation after a March 11-12 review.
The Uzbek government has ignored Human Rights Watch’s calls for an independent investigation of the suppression of a 2005 demonstration in Andijan. APH
