ASTANA – Kazakhstan wants to become a partner in the consortium running the Karachaganak oil and gas field in the western part of the country. It is also considering inclusion of the field within the national taxation system, Novosti-Kazakhstan reports March 10, quoting Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Executive Secretary Kanatbek Safinov.
Karachaganak Petroleum Operating is currently controlled by four international corporations — Britain’s BG Group (32.5%), Italy’s Eni (32.5%), the United States’ Chevron (20%) and Russia’s Lukoil (15%). Their 40-year-long production-sharing agreement dates back to 1997.
The British partner sued Kazakhstan in international arbitrage court in 2009 to protest the levying of export duties on hydrocarbons from Karachaganak.
