BISHKEK – The Kyrgyz opposition plans to stage a national assembly on the Ala-Too square in downtown Bishkek March 17, RIA-Novosti reported March 9.

The opposition earlier refused to participate in a March 23 assembly called by President Kurmanbek Bakiyev.

Leaders of the United People’s Movement invited government officials to participate in the event, where the opposition intends to discuss protection of civil rights and controversial industrial privatisations.

The planned rally challenges restrictions on assembly imposed by Bishkek Mayor Nuriman Tiuleev March 4, which contravened a March 2 Constitutional Court ruling that invalidated such restrictions.
