ASHGABAT – A construction company affiliated with the Iranian national railway has started building a 325km segment of railway through Turkmenistan along the eastern Caspian shore, chrono-tm.org reported March 4.
It will connect Iran to Kazakhstan. The existing railway connection is overburdened.
The new route will take three years to build, according to ferghana.ru. Turkmenistan plans to pay the estimated US $700m construction cost half in cash and half in natural gas exports to Iran.
Turkmenistan has strategic importance for Iran, since it gives Iran access to post-Soviet countries and to China’s railways, chrono-tm.org reported.
