TAJIKISTAN — A July 17 ribbon cutting ceremony marked the grand opening of a new market in Khorog, a city in Gorno-Badakhshan that is expected to provide new employment opportunites in the area. Taking part in the ceremony was Prime Minister Okil Okilov.
The 3,000-square-metre market can accommodate 600 vendors. Construction began four years ago and was financed largely by the local municipal budget with assistance from the Prince Kareem Aga Khan IV Foundation. Building costs ran to around US$1 million.
This new facility is expected to play a critical role in the social and economic development of the region. Future profits from the market will be put towards building new warehouses, financing the commercial production of construction materials, and opening hotels and retail outlets.
