TASHKENT - The millionth car rolled off the assembly line of the Uzbek joint enterprise GM Uzbekistan factory at the end of November. It was the Chevrolet Lacetti – the factory’s new series model. Most of these cars will be sold on the domestic market and only a small number of them will be exported. In Uzbekistan the price of a Lacetti will be about $27,000 [USD].
At an official ceremony, GM Europe Director Gerald Johnson noted that “the production of the new model is a logical continuation of the policy of GM Uzbekistan directed at the renovation of the model range, the satisfaction of the concrete demands and tastes of the consumer, an increase in production quality and the introduction of modern technologies."
GM Uzbekistan was created in October 2007 based on the framework of the joint enterprise UZ-Daewoo Auto, which has operated in the country since 1992. After the bankruptcy of the South Korean Daewoo, its Uzbek partner Uzavtoprom signed an agreement with General Motors. Today, GM Uzbekistan produces seven models of passenger cars, including the commercial production of the Nexia, Matiz, Damas and Lacetti, which constitute one series, and the major component assembly of three Chevrolet models: Captiva, Epica and Tacuma. Last year, 170,000 automobiles were produced by the enterprise, with a design capacity of 240,000 cars per year.
