DUSHANBE - On Nov. 25 in Dushanbe, the main building of the Abuali Ibnsino Tajikistan State Medical University opened after being restored following a fire.
The government spent more than $4 million [USD] on the reconstruction of the building. Head of Public Relations of the University Islomiddin Saidov said that more than $1 million was donated by citizens and local and international organisations.
Today, the university is the sole centre for the training of specialists in public health services in Tajikistan. It has six faculties and 63 departments. The university has 5,700 students, including more than 500 foreign students from 12 countries.
A serious fire on Dec. 26, 2007, destroyed much of the main building of the medical university constructed in 1939. While no students or faculty were injured, 11 fire-fighters received burns. Fortunately, the most valuable library of the VUZ (Institute of Higher Education) was saved.
